Abstract

1422976 Sliding seals; universal joints GLAENZER SPICER 10 April 1973 [5 May 1972 (2)] 17153/73 Headings F2B and F2U A sealing arrangement for a telescopic universal joint comprises a ring 10, e.g. of rubber, having at least one lip 10c 10d for engaging a shaft 8, and a cap 11 for securing the ring 10 to a hollow telescoping shaft 4. A skirt portion of the cap 11 has a tongue 11b for engaging a groove in the shaft 4, and notches (11e), Fig. 5 (not shown), around the periphery of the cap 11, which may be of plastics material, enhance its elasticity. A pressure release valve in a disc 13 closing the bore of the shaft 4 may comprise a valve member 16, e.g. of rubber, a portion 16b of which engages in a central hole 14 of the disc 13, trapped air or excess lubricant escaping through holes .15 by raising a peripheral portion of the member 16.
