[Also in Divisions F2 and G1] Milking apparatus comprises a milk receptacle 60 for receiving milk from teat cups 10, a first source of vacuum connected to the receptacle and teat cups, a second source of relatively higher vacuum connected to an outlet 74 adjacent the bottom of the receptacle for transferring milk to a reservoir (not shown) via a conduit 72, a valve 31 for separating the sources of vacuum and a milk measuring container 86. The lower vacuum is applied to the receptacle 60 and the tea cups via pipes 16-18 whilst the relatively high vacuum is applied to the pipe 32 delivering the milk to the reservoir. The level of the milk in the receptacle 60 rises until the valve 31 is lifted thus allowing the bulk of the milk to flow to the conduit 72 via a pipe 64 and a proportion of the milk to flow through a conduit 70 via a pipe 62. The container 86 is connected to the conduit 70 via a conduit 85 to prevent siphoning action and a hook shaped conduit 84 which, by engaging a peg 82, raises or lowers the container 86 in order to correctly calibrate the container. An opening 96 in the bottom of the container is closed by a valve 95 so that on lifting a tab 92 air enters the container via a hole 94 thus causing the valve to drop and allowing a sample of milk to enter a cup 102. Milk is removed from the container by manually lifting it above the pipe 32 so that the milk drains through a tube 90. In a modification, the conduits 62, 70 are omitted, the entire milk from the receptacle flowing through a double valve incorporating a needle valve which lifts from its seating by an amount proportional to the volume flow to enable a proportion of the milk to pass to the measuring container.
