Abstract
1,190,469. Variable capacitors. BAUSCH & LOMB Inc. 27 Nov., 1968 [6 Dec., 1967], No. 56394/68. Heading H1M. [Also in Division G1] A capacitive transducer for measuring angular displacement comprises two fixed outer plates 26, 28 (Fig. 2), and a rotatable centre plate 30 acting as a shield. The fixed outer plate 28 consists of an insulating disc covered on one side with a thin film of copper 52; centre plate 30 consists of an insulating disc with one half of one side covered with a thin copper coating 50, outer plate 26 consists of an insulating disc covered on one side with a copper film divided into a semi-circular ribbon 44 (Fig. 4), and the remainder 42. The three plates are assembled in a housing with a shaft 16 attached to centre plate 30 by a bushing. An A.C. voltage is applied to end plate 28 (Fig. 10) and a voltage is developed on ribbon 44 depending on the capacitance between the ribbon and plate 28, which depends on the length of ribbon not shielded by centre plate 30. This voltage is therefore indicative of the angular position of shaft 16. The effect of the capacitance between the ribbon 44 and the plate 30 is eliminated by a high-gain amplifier 62 with negative feed-back via capacitor 64 connected to the ribbon, whereby the ribbon is maintained at substantially earth potential, i.e. at the same potential as plate 30. In modifications, the ribbon may be duplicated (Fig. 5, not shown) to measure over 360 degrees, or it may be wedge-shaped (Fig. 6, not shown) for a non-linear relationship.
