Abstract

1421156 Voltage measuring SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL 8 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 25115/72 He ading G1U [Also in Division H1] A probe for measuring A.C. voltage comprises a capacitor constituted by flat plate electrode 12, a dielectric oxide film 17 formed thereon and a deposited counter-electrode 11, assembled within plates 19, 20, plate 19 having a window 18 through which the capacitor can "view" the object carrying the voltage to be measured and plate 20 acting as a shield. The capacitor is held flat by a metal plug (not shown). The capacitor may comprise an aluminium foil having an anodic oxide film and a painted or evaporated silver layer. The electrodes have connecting tail portions 15, 16 insulated from each other and as shown curved away from the plane of the plates, which is stated to prevent fracture of the oxide layer. The tail assembly constitutes part of a short strip transmission line and terminals 13, 14 thereof are connected across input resistor R of amplifying and measuring circuitry, Fig. 4 (not shown), located behind shield plate. The measured voltage may be displayed by an oscilloscope. Alternatively the probe may be self contained with a battery and voltage discriminator whose output is taken to a mechanical counter or which generates light or audio signals. Multiple outputs may be derived by using a capacitor comprising more than two stacked plates and tails.
