1,190,306. Making V-belts. HOXTERSCHE GUMMIFADENFABRIK EMIL ARNTZ K.G. 14 Oct., 1968 [27 June, 1968], No. 48513/68. Heading F2Q. Concerns a method of, and apparatus for, making a set of endless V-belts all of the same length, each belt including tensile reinforcing strands, e.g. of a polyester, which shrink when heated to 100-180‹ C. Each belt 3 is given a first vulcanization while unstressed, moving slowly round a heated drum 1 and a movable roller 2, Fig. 1, a band 4 passing round guide rollers 6 and a tensioning roller 5 pressing the V-belt 3 against the heated drum 1. A second vulcanization is carried out with the belt tensioned by moving the roller 2, to offset the shrinkage produced in the first stage. The V- belt 3 is transferred hot to loading apparatus, Fig. 3, where it passes round slowly driven rollers 9, 10. Roller 10 is adjustably positioned so that a pointer 19 indicates the required belt length. A standard load 16 is applied briefly via the roller 9 to stretch the belt. As the belt contracts again, it reaches the required length, as indicated by a pointer 18 moving with the roller 9, and is then rapidly cooled by a cooling device 22 to stabilize its length.
