Abstract

Conveyer and other machine belts, comprising a vulcanizable carcase and parallel tension elements of wire cables or cords, are made by a step-by-step but continuous process in which an assembly of tension elements is tensioned, and is enclosed within the carcase material which is then vulcanized in a press, while held in tensioned condition by clamps. As shown, Fig. 2, tension elements 2, 3, 4 (examples of those constituting the reinforcing layer) are led from reels 5 around guiding rollers 6, 8, 11 and 12, and through a comb 9 and an open clamp 10, to groups of tensioning rollers 14-16, one for each element, which can be raised hydraulically to tension the elements, and are then festooned over weighted elevated pulleys 25 used to store a length thereof until required. The elements then pass to a track 35 movable on rails between the apparatus described and a vulcanising press 44, Fig. 1, the track carrying rolls 38, 39 of carcase material which is pressed on the elements, by rollers 37, 37a and a press 36, during the step-by-step travel of the track away from the press 44. Clamps 47, 59, 33 and 10 are manipulated to enable the belting to be drawn in successive steps, by wind-up mechanism 46, through the various parts of the apparatus (the truck 35 travelling forward simultaneously), while maintaining the tension on the elements throughout.
