[Also in Division C3] Waterproof coatings and textile finishes can be obtained from anthranilic starch esters (I) where X is a starch radical or substituted anthranilic starch esters which are obtained by reacting a Starch with isatoic anhydride or a substituted isatoic anhydride (II) where R 1 is selected from hydrogen, substituted and unsubstituted alkyl, unsaturated alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, halogen and acetyl radicals and R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are individually selected from hydrogen, substituted and unsubstituted alkyl unsaturated alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, nitro halogen and acetyl radicals and from radicals linked together to complete a fused benzene ring structure with the benzene ring shown in (II). The primary or secondary amino groups can react with aldehyde and methylol groups containing resins e.g. melamine formaldehyde resins which can be used for waterproofing. The starch ester coatings on paper or textiles can be rendered waterproof or even water repellant by increasing the pH. Chlorinesubstituted isatoic anhydrides yield starch esters having fire-resistant characteristics.
