An apparatus for supporting a roll of web material includes a frame having supporting standards for a primary roll and a carrier supporting an auxiliary roll, the carrier being so dimensioned as to facilitate transfer of the auxiliary roll to the standards when the primary roll is exhausted and discarded. As shown, a cloth spreading machine 10 comprises a frame 11 which is movable longitudinally over a cloth spreading table 14 and which supports a pair of upright standards 17, 18 furnished with respective bearings 19, 20, carrying the spindle 22 of the cloth roll 23, when in the spreading position. A carrier 30 is mounted on the rear of the frame 11 and is arcuate in cross-section so that it may support an auxiliary roll of material, the carrier being shorter in length than the distance between the standards 17, 18. Thus, when it is necessary to replace the primary roll the auxiliary roll can be elevated into the standards by depressing the near end of its spindle, using the edge 35 of the carrier 30 as a fulcrum, so that the remote end can be swung upwards into the bearing 20, the near end then being lifted into the bearing 19. The auxiliary roll can thus be positioned into the cloth spreading position without the operator having to take the full weight of the roll. The standards 17, 18 may be mounted on a carriage frame 25, movable transversely on the frame 11, to permit lateral adjustment of the roll 23 and the web 26 spread by the machine 10.
