Abstract

1,189,853. Alumina ceramic substrates. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 30 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 24953/67. Heading C1A. A self-supporting sheet between 75 and 1300 microns thick consists of at least 97% wt. alpha alumina crystals being no larger than 30 microns in size and having a median crystal size no greater than 6 microns, and has a specific gravity of 3À75-3À94, and a free surface having an unground as-fired surface finish of less than 10 microinches centre line average. Any other inorganic constituents such as MgO, SiO 2 and CaO in the ceramic must be non-promoters, preferably inhibitors, of crystal growth. The substrate may be prepared by mixing, e.g. in a ball mill calcined alumina having an average particle size of between 1 and 2 microns and preferably a surface area greater than 1À9 sq. metres/gm. with any suitable inorganic additives and a volatile temporary binder and diluent system consisting of a polyvinyl butyral organic resin, an oil plasticizer, e.g. castor oil, ethyl alcohol and toluol as solvent. This composition is de-aired and knife-coated on a very smooth-surfaced temporary carrier film. This film is then dried, cut into plates and fired at 1500-1600‹ C. with a 4 to 5 hour soak period at full temperature to remove organic material and densify the alumina.
