Abstract

1,189,716. Velocity-modulated tubes; ion pumps. SIEMENS A.G. 8 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36319/67. Heading H1D. In a velocity-modulated tube having a magnetically focused electron beam 1 and a collector which is magnetically screened-as shown, by iron cylinder 3-an ion getter pump is formed by the ionizing action of the electron beam in the interaction region of the tube, and by an ion trap formed by an electrode of gettering material in the form of a hollow cylinder of perforated mesh mounted coaxially within the collector. As shown, the gettering electrode 4 is of titanium, held at a small positive potential, and is coaxially mounted within a cylinder 5 which is formed by an extension of a delay line, and upon the inner surface of which atomized gettering material from the mesh electrode 4 is deposited. Preferably, the perforations in electrode 4 exceed in total area the intervening wall portions; the separate perforations are each at least as large as the cross-section of the electron beam; the spacing between the electrodes 4 and 5 is at least 1 cm. and electrode 5 is held at such a positive potential that its field penetrates through the mesh electrode to the boundary of the electron beam.
