Abstract
1,189,405. Polyphenylene oxides. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 2 Feb., 1968 [3 Feb., 1967], No. 5386/68. Heading C3R. Polyphenylene oxide polymers are obtained by reacting oxygen with a phenol of formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are each a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, hydrocarbon group, halogenated hydrocarbon group, hydrocarbonoxy group, cyanoalkyl group, cyano group, nitro group or a mono- or di-alkyl-substituted-amino group, at least one being a hydrogen atom and at least one other being other than a hydrogen atom, in the presence of 0À05 to 50 mole per cent of the phenol of a di- or tri-valent manganese compound which has a site available for co-ordination, 1 to 100 moles per mole of the manganese compound of a tertiary amine and 0À01 to 30 times the weight of the tertiary amine of an alcohol, at a temperature below 150‹ C. in anhydrous conditions. A free radical precursor also may be present in an amount of 0À01 to 5 mole per cent of the phenol. An inert organic liquid reaction medium may be present. In examples polymers are obtained 2,6-xylenol, 2,6 - dimethoxyphenol, 2,6 - dichlorophenol, 2- methyl - 6 - chlorophenol, 2 - methyl - 6 - allylphenol, 2,6 - diethylphenol, 2,5 - dimethylphenol and o-cresol; the manganese compounds are manganous chloride, manganous acetate and a manganous bromide-ethanol complex salt; the tertiary amines are pyridine and picoline; the alcohols are ethyleneglycol monomethyl ether and methyl alcohol; acetyl peroxide is used as a free radical precursor and nitrobenzene and chlorobenzene and also present in two examples.
