Abstract

1,189,131. Knitting-machines. A. KIRKLAND & CO. Ltd. 14 July, 1967 [15 July, 1966; 31 Maroh, 1967], Nos. 31911/66 and 14768/67. Heading D1C. In a circular machine having a plurality of pattern devices, each having several rows of bits, the number of cylinder tricks divided by the number of bits in a row is not an interger. Each pattern wheel 29 comprises a series of coaxial discs, having frangible teeth, engaging butts of selector jacks 5 which pivot on cams about the notch 25. In an example described the machine has 36 feeders and knits a two colour fabric by selecting needles to knit, at one of two feeds, at pattern wheels arranged before alternate feeds. Each wheel has two co-axial discs and each disc, which has 96 bits, is divided into two semicircular sectors, the sectors of one exactly overlying those of the other. The jacks are arranged in sets of 48, alternate groups having butts at alternate ones of two levels. The junctions between the sets coincide on rotation of the machine, with the sector junctions. Thus one set will be acted on by the upper disc and the next by the lower disc. However since the number of bits -96- is not exactly divisible into the number of needles -1680- two adjacent sets will be of the same type. These adjacent sets will therefore be influenced by bits around the entire circumference of the disc. With the arrangement described a set of jacks cooperates with one disc sector on one revolution and the other sector of the same disc on the next revolution the patterning is thereby extended without spiralling, and has a maximum extent of 36 courses by 96 wales. Increased pattern area is obtained by increasing the number of discs and correspondingly reducing the number of jacks per set-specific numerical examples are given. Half gauging may be used. The spindles on which the pattern discs are mounted can be clamped when the cylinder is stationary to facilitate pattern changing without disturbing the alignment -of cylinder and pattern devices.
