Abstract
1,188,171. Electrophotographic materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 9 March, 1967 [14 March, 1966], No. 11061/67. Heading H1K. In the production of the photoconductive layer of an electrophotographic material, photoconductor particles are dispersed in a solution of a polymer or copolymer of a lower alkyl methacrylate treated to remove peroxide, and the dispersion is coated on to a support. Resins are freed from peroxide by dissolving the resin in an organic solvent and heating for a prolonged period under an inert atmosphere (e.g. nitrogen), or by heating the resin by itself, or by chemical treatment of the resin. The resin may have been prepared from purified components without the use of a catalyst or with the use of a non-peroxide catalyst such as 2 :2<SP>1</SP>-azo-bis-(methyl-propionitrile), azo-dicyclohexyl-carbonitrile, dimethyl-α,α-azodiisobutyrate, or α:α-azo-bis-(α-methylvaleronitrile). Suggested photoconductors are oxides and/or sulphides of Mg, Ti, As, Pb, Sn, Sb, In, Se, Te, and Cd. Zinc oxide is used as photoconductor in the specific examples; it is treated with trimethylchlorosilane before being sensitized with crystal violet and mixed with a silicone resin which is to form part of the binder. The bulk of the binder is constituted by the polymer or interpolymer of lower alkyl methacrylate or by a copolymer of such a methacrylate with stryene. Paper-aluminium foil laminate is used as the support. Other dye sensitizers are suggested.
