Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A method of generating vibrations for compacting concrete and operating shaking machines, comprises mounting an inertia ring 32 for cyclic orbital movement relative to a core 10 to form a work chamber between opposed surfaces between the ring and core, providing a movable barrier 74 between the core and ring dividing the work chamber into a motor cavity and exhaust cavity the volumes of which vary reciprocally in dependence upon the distance at any time between the barrier and the position at which the ring approaches closest to the core, admitting fluid to the motor cavity through inlet and outlet ports which are opened cyclically by movement of the ring to cause the orbital movement of the ring, the fluid pressure in the work chamber being maintained at such a magnitude that the ring is maintained out of contact with the core. The barrier may comprise a blade sealingly urged against the surface of the ring by pressurised fluid introduced beneath the blade through apertures 86, or the barrier may comprise a blade pivotally connected to the ring and slidable within a bore in the core. Axial clearances 76 between the end faces of the ring and the end walls of the work chamber are supplied with pressurised fluid through ports 80 and 82. The linear mass velocity of the fluid fed into the work chamber through arcuate inlet ports 62 and 70 is substantially zero owing to expansion in chambers 50 and 68. The outlet ports 90 and 92 of the work chamber are also arcuate.
