In an automatic lubrication unit a lubrication pump has a cylinder 16, Fig. 1, and a piston 17, the latter being actuated periodically by means of an electrically-powered thermal linear motor 19 so as to deliver lubricant to metered injectors (not shown). Lubricant passes from a reservoir 10 to the cylinder 16, via a filter 13 and a valve 15. A heating coil of the motor 19 is supplied with electricity thus causing wax therein to expand and move the piston 17. The valve 15 closes, lubricant is forced into a timing cylinder 41, Fig. 3, and forces a piston 42 against a spring 43. Further increase of pressure in the pump cylinder 16 is transmitted through ducts 48, 49, Fig. 1, to a micro-switch operating cylinder 50 having a piston 51 therein which acts against a spring 54. An operating-rod 52 is attached to the piston 51 and operates a micro-switch (not shown) to cut-off the supply of electricity to the motor 19. Surplus lubricant in the pump cylinder 16 is returned to the pump 10 via the valve 15; the wax in the motor 19 cools, this being facilitated by mean of fins 65, and the pump piston 17 is returned by the spring 18, thus allowing lubricant to again enter the cylinder 16; lubricant in the timing cylinder 41 is forced through a timing orifice 40, Fig. 3, to the metered injectors (not shown) by means of the piston 42 being urged by the spring 43. When the timing cylinder 41 is empty, a striker 56, carried by the piston 42, closes the microswitch (not shown) and restarts the cycle.
