In a fabric inspection machine of the sloping table kind, the table top 11 is shielded from ambient illumination by an opaque superstructure 15 which houses a local source 16 of illumination for flooding the table top with light at substantially uniform density. If the fabric to be inspected is supplied in a convention size roll 52, Fig. 2, it is mounted on idle rollers 53 within the machine base 10 but a larger roll 54 is mounted on a trolley 55 behind the base 10. The fabric passes over two parallel tensioning bars 12 the ends of which are secured to brackets 39 pivoted at their mid-points; over a conveyor roller 12a; over the inspection table 11; between guide bars 36, 37 mounted in brackets 34 and the bar 36 being adjustable; and is rewound into a roll 60 by batching rollers 13. The superstructure 15 is in the form of a hood or canopy having opaque side and back walls and roof and is open only above the lower front edge of the table 11. A series of tubular lamps 16 is mounted in the hood above a diffusion screen 17 hinged at 40 and held by releasable catches 42. The roof of the hood supports roll lifting means comprising a frame 21 carrying a motor 23 coupled to a pair of rope drums 24 each having a rope 25, Fig. 1, wound thereon and engageable at its free end by a snap hook 26 with a projecting end of a spindle 27 carrying the roll 60 so that the complete roll 60 can be lifted. The frame 21 is pulled forwards of the machine along girders 20 to carry the roll into a release position. A yardage meter 29, Fig. 1, is mounted above the lower edge of the table 11 and is driven by a wheel (30), Fig. 5 (not shown), mounted beneath and projecting slightly through a slot (31) in the table. Bearing brakets 43, Fig. 6, carry bearings 44 for the rolls 13 and guide channels 45 for the spindle ends of the roll 60. After the machine has been stopped, upon detection of a fault, the roll is lifted and moved so that its spindle ends engage sockets 47 so that the operator can mark the fault and then restore the roll 60 into engagement with the rollers 13.
