Abstract

A storage battery comprises a multi-cell container 1, an intermediate member 11 extending around the top of the container in liquid-tight relation therewith, a one-piece cover 10 extending over the member 11 in liquid-tight relation therewith, partition means 12a carried by the member 11 and forming, with the cover 10, recombination chambers 9 aligned one with each cell and communicating one with the other, recombination means in each chamber 9 capable of recombining H 2 and O 2 released from the cells, and passages 13, 13a, 14 appropriate to each cell respectively to permit gases released from the cell to enter the chamber 9 associated therewith and the return to the cell of the water formed in the chamber 9. As shown, catalystcoated pellets 16 of Al 2 O 3 are supported in chamber 9 on member 15 which also carries a heater 17. Cover member 15a carried on support 15 prevents water condensing on cover 10 from dripping into tubes 13, 13a which allow gases to enter chambers 9 from the cells 2. Condensed water runs down the cover and down sloping membrane 12 to re-enter the appropriate cell through tube 14. The chambers 9 communicate one with the other through passage 21 which also communicates with a pressure release valve 22. The lower ends of tubes 13, 13a, 14 are protected from electrolyte by baffle 18 having ports 20 and cover-plate 19. The catalyst may be Pt, Pd or V 2 O 5 .
