Abstract
1,187,196. Moulding insulating tubes. ELASTOMER A.G. 6 June, 1968 [26 April, 1968], N. 27054/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A foamed plastics insulation tube for pipes, comprising foamed polyurethane 23 encased between an outer plastics foil 4 and an inner paper foil 5 and formed with a longitudinal slit moulded through a wall of the tube, is continuously moulded by simultaneously feeding the outer and inner foils through a mould tube 8 provided with an upper longitudinal slit through which extends a fillet 9<SP>1</SP> of a core 9; the foam reactants being introduced from a pipe 19 into a trough formed by the outer foil 4 prior to entering the mould. The fillet 9<SP>1</SP> provides a support for the foils 4, 5 whereby they are drawn through the mould assembly by a pair of roller chain conveyers 18. The mould core 9 is clamped to supports 11, 12 by an adjustable tension from springs 21 and contains a pipe 24 for the return of coolant which is introduced between the pipe 24 and core 9 at the inlet end of the mould. The core 9 is adjustable in the radial direction. A saw 13 introduced through the moulded tube slit forms a longitudinal slit extending substantially throughout the thickness of the opposite wall of the tube, whereby assembly over a pipe is facilitated. The ends of all but one of the foil strips extending beyond the moulded slit are severed by a cutter 14 whereby the remaining foil strip end may be adhesively bonded beyond the slit to secure the insulation around a pipe. The insulation tube is cut to desired lengths by a transversely reciprocating travelling saw 16.
