Abstract
Insulated casing for an underground cable is produced by extruding a tube of thermoplastic material in such a manner that stresses occur in the material which cause the tube to recover its original extruded shape after unrolling the material on site. The extrusion machine consists of an extrusion chamber at the outlet of which there is a centering ring and a central mandrel. The extruded tube then passes through a calibrating ring in the form of a vacuum chamber which fixes the outside dia. of the tube and then a cooling ring which cools the outer surface only. An identification strip may be attached to the outside wall whilst the material is still in the plastic condition. The tube is then cut open longitudinally and rolled to a flat strip and coiled on a spool for handling and storage. The mandrel may be placed eccentrically, in which case, the tube is cut at the thinnest wall section. Alternatively, the tube may be elliptical when the cut is made in the longest side of the elipse or a spiral casing strip may be generated with the tendency to reform the spiral with an edge overlap. The prestressed coiled tube can be laid flat on site whereupon it slowly resumes its original shape but not so quickly that the cable cannot be laid inside it and branch connections made. Consequently much of the traditional site work is eliminated.
