Abstract

1361599 Tobacco smoke filters BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 18 Oct 1971 [2 Nov 1970] 51931/70 Heading A2C [Also in Division B5] Tobacco smoke filters are produced by apparatus comprising a device for extruding a continuous rod of foamed plastics material, a haul-off device having an endless belt or tape for engaging round a portion of the periphery of the rod as it leaves the extruder, the belt or tape passing through at least the lower part of a garniture of a filter-rod making machine, and a device for cutting the rod into required lengths as it leaves the haul-off device. The extruder and cut-off devices may be of conventional type, and the haul-off device, in one form, consists of a belt 1 which has a concave outer surface passing over pulleys carried by adjustable bearing plates 2, 3 and mounted over the lower part (not shown) of the garniture where the rod 13 is temporarily wrapped in the usual tape 12. The belt may be of rubber faced with plastics foam material, e.g. polyurethane or polyethylene, or it may be made from rubber &c tubing, or it may be in the form of a toothed belt positively engaging the pulleys or sprockets and faced on its outer surface with segments of foamed plastics material formed on their outer surfaces with longitudinal recesses of nearly semi-circular cross-section. The belt is driven through variable-speed gearing 19 which may be controlled by a servomotor so that the haul-off speed corresponds to the rate of delivery of extrudate. For example, the extruded rod after passing through a cooling tube or over a wire mesh belt and then through the haul-off device may pass through a circumference-monitoring gauge controlling the variable-speed gear before it enters the cut-off device. In a modification, the haul-off belt is constituted by the garniture tape which is made wider than usual in a filterrod garniture, and the upper part of the garniture consists of two adjustable plates which are formed so that the tape is wrapped around substantially the whole of the circumference of the rod. The apparatus may be used with rod made of various materials such as foamed polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon or cellulose acetate; it may also be used to wrap the rod in a paper strip, and it may be used with rod of other than solid, circular cross-section.
