Abstract
118,716. Domanico, C. Oct. 12, 1917. Morse and like sounders.-A Morse receiver comprises a horseshoe magnet the ends of which are bent at right-angles and provided with cores upon each of which are wound two opposing and unequal windings connected in series and so arranged that, when energized by current of one polarity, the magnetic flux is increased, and when energized by current of the opposite polarity, the flux due to the stronger winding counterbalances that due to the weaker winding and the permanent magnet, thereby allowing a controlling-spring to operate the armature of the receiver. The intermediate stations are provided with plug switches and are so arranged that the use of batteries at the stations is avoided. The magnet 3, Figs. 2 and 5, has its ends bent at right-angles and provided with holes 5 by means of which the cores of the coils 4 are attached. Each core 6, Fig. 3, is provided with two opposing and unequal windings connected in series. Each of the intermediate statons I to V, Fig. 6, is provided with a lightning-arrester 13, a plug switch 14, and a transmitting-key 15, while all the stations are provided with a receiver as described above. The central station Cs is also provided . with two generators 25, 26 adapted to send currents of opposite polarity to line, resistances L, a two-position switch 7, a relay 8, and a transmitting-key 10. The terminal station VI is provided with a two-position switch 21 and a battery 28, in addition to the apparatus of the intermediate stations. With the switch 7 in its left-hand position and the key 10 in the position shown, the generator 25 sends a current of one polarity to line and through all the intermediate stations which are not short-circuited and through the switch 21 in its right-hand position. The magnets of the operative receivers are thereby de-energized, and the armatures 23, Fig. 2, are moved to their upper positions by the springs 23<1>. When the key 10 is operated, the generator 25 is disconnected and the generator 26 connected to line, thereby causing the armatures 23 to be moved to their lower positions. To signal between two intermediate stations, a key 15 is operated to break the circuit, and the armatures of the receivers are moved to their upper positions by means of the springs 23<1>.
