Apparatus for indicating how an ambient temperature has differed from a pre-selected temperature as an integral of temperature difference with respect to time comprises a metal block 10 exposed to the ambient temperature, a temperature sensor in the form of a bi-metallic switch 12 which is located in a hole 11 in the block 10 and which closes below the pre-selected temperature, a heater 14 disposed in a further hole 13 in the block 10 and controlled by the switch 12, so that the block is maintained at the pre-selected temperature and an indicator 16, preferably in the fan of a synchronous motor connected to a cyclometer type indicator, for indicating the energy consumed by the heater, this being directly proportional to the difference in temperature between the ambient temperature and the pre-selected temperature, integrated with respect to time. The apparatus is used in the determination of the amount of fuel likely to have been used by a heating installation over a period of time assuming that as tempertures fall, more fuel will be used. However, since there will generally be a temperature at which a maximum rate of fuel consumption is reached and below which no extra fuel is used, the heater 14 may have a limited heat output so that it can only produce a limited rise in temperature of the block 10. In place of the switch 12, a suitably connected resistance thermistor may be used, if desired. Also, since there may be times when the heating installation is not in use, a tuning device to switch off the indicator during these times may be used.
