Abstract

A non-gelled, solvent soluble hydroxycontaining copolymer is prepared from an organic solution of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having dispersed therein particles of a monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid in an amount of from 2 to 50% by weight, based on total monomer, by polymerizing the said monomer and acid at an elevated temperature, preferably at least 200‹ F., in the presence of a free-radical gonerting polymerization catalyst and an organic mono-epoxide, the epoxide being present to convert at least 30% of the carboxyl groups to hydroxy ester groups. At least 0À5% by weight of an esterification catalyst, based on the dicarboxylic acid, may be used, and suitable compounds are a tertiary amine, quaternary ammonium salt or an alkali metal salt. The copolymer may contain 20 to 45% acrylate or methacrylate ester containing at least two carbon atoms in the esterifying alcohol, and the balance of the copolymer may contain a monovinyl aromatic compound or methyl methacrylate or mixture thereof. The dicarboxylic acid is preferably itaconic or fumaric acid, and the epoxide may be one of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butene-2-oxide, phenyl glycidyl ether, isopropyl glycidyl ether or styrene oxide. The solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon or alcohol and may contain a monoethylenically unsaturated amide, such as acrylamide, present in from 2 to 7% by weight of the polymerizable material, and an aldehyde such as formaldehyde. In the examples, vinyl toluene and ethylacrylate were co-polymerized with fumaric acid in the presence of butylene oxide, styrene oxide or propylene oxide, using as catalysts, benzoyl peroxide or ditertiary butyl peroxide and benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. In one example, a thermosetting co-polymer is prepared by the addition in the co-polymerization of fumaric acid, styrene, and ethyl acrylate, of paraformaldehyde and acrylamide. In further examples, enamels are produced from various combinations of the hydroxylated co-polymers with epoxy resins and methylated-butylated melamine resins.
