Abstract
1,186,891. Discharge lamp arrangements. MATSUSHITA DENKO K.K. 7 April, 1967 [9 April, 1966; 22 April, 1966(2) ; 29 Dec., 1966], No. 16015/67. Heading H2H. A starting device for a filamentary discharge lamp comprises a starting pulse generating circuit including a switching element having substantially symmetrical forward and reverse switching characteristics, a capacitor, and a pulse transformer arranged so that startiing pulses are generated and filament preheating current is derived either during each or alternate half cycles of an A.C. source voltage. A discharge lamp F fed through a ballast B is ignited by charging through heaters #1, f2, a capacitor C1 which is discharged each half cycle through a transformer primary winding W1 by a five layer breakdown device Q1. To adjust the heater current, a resistor R<1> with a shunting capacitor C2 and an optional diode D or other breakdown device to by-pass the induced voltage from windings W1, W2 may be serially connected. The heaters may be fed from secondary windings on a transformer connected across the mains supply Figs. 9-11 (not shown). An inductor may be substituted for the resistor R<1>. Further arrangements are described in the specification.
