[Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Water soluble resin obtained by reacting (1) an aromatic hydrocarbon-formaldehyde resin (or such a resin modified with a natural resin, phenol, alkylphenol, maleic anhydride or polyhydric alcohol), with (2) an unsaturated oil or fatty acid and then with (3) an α, #- unsaturated carboxylic acid, followed by partial esterification of the acid groups with (4) a polyhydric alcohol, and finally neutralization with (5) ammonia and/or an amine is suitable for coating surfaces. In Examples resins are prepared (1) by reacting a xyleneformaldehyde resin with linseed oil and soybean oil, then with maleic anhydride, esterifying with trimethylolpropane and neutralizing with ammonia, (2) by reacting a xylene-formaldehyde resin modified with p-tert.-butylphenol, with linseed oil and dehydrated castor oil, then with maleic anhydride, esterifying with trimethylolethane and neutralizing with triethylamine; and (3) by reacting a tolueneformaldehyde resin modified with rosin, with linseed oil and soybean oil, then with maleic anhydride, esterifying with neopentyl glycol and neutralizing with ammonia; the resins are diluted with ethylene glycol monobutylether, mixed with water and cobalt and lead naphthenates added, and used to coat steel panels which are then baked.
