A machine for grinding milling cutters 4, 4a for shaping the interior of tubular elements, the cutters being mounted on a cutter carrier 5 and having a plurality of blades whose external profiles are each defined by a portion 2 which is a large-radius circular arc centred on the axis of rotation of the cutter and is extended by a terminal arc 3 having a smaller radius, comprises a carriage 8 for supporting the cutter carrier 5 and mounted on a plate 9 carrying a first pivot 11 which is rotatable in a support arm 10 comprising a slider 50 pivotable on a second, pivot 12 on a stand 13, 14, a carrier 30 for a wheel 23 for grinding the blades of the cutters, the carrier having a spindle 28 which is in a plane substantially perpendicular to the two pivots 11, 12 and is mounted on a support plate 31 adjustable about a pivot 33 having an axis in the plane of the operating surface of the wheel, the pivot being mounted on a member 35 movable along a slide 52 on the base, and a cam 55 on the end of the first pivot co-operating with a pattern 18 for guiding the support arm. The cutters 4, 4a are used for milling lobes in the internal surfaces of tubular elements, such as graphite jackets, and carried at opposite ends of a pivot 6 mounted in the carrier 5, each cutter having a number of blades 1 having portions 2, 3 of large and small radii. The carrier is. rotatably indexable in a carriage 8 adjustable along a. slideway on a plate 9 by a screw 49. The plate is connected by the first pivot 11 to an arm 10 which has a slider rotatably mounted on the second pivot 12 located in a bracket 13 on the base 14. The slider adjusts the distance between the pivots, the first of which determines the radius of the small arc 3 of the cutter, and the second of which determines the radius of the large arc 2. The movement of the support arm 10 about the pivots is effected by a handle 46 and is controlled by a cam 55 on the lower end of the first pivot and having surfaces 15, 16, 17 for engaging- surfaces 15a, 16a, 17a respectively on a pattern 18 secured to the bracket 13 and enclosed in an oil-filler casing 48. The grinding wheel, which can be trued by dressing device 43, is mounted on a spindle 28 which is driven by a belt 37 from an electric motor 36 and is mounted in a bush 29 axially adjustable by a screw 40 in a casing 30 mounted on the support plate 31. The latter is adjustable about a pivot 33 on the member 35 by a handle 47 to determine the clearance angle ground on the blades, and the member 35 is adjustable axially of the spindle 28 along a slide 52 on the base 14. The carrier 5 is indexable to 180 degree position in the carriage 8 by a spring-loaded plunger 22 to present the cutters to the grinding wheel, and a finger 25 is spring-loaded into engagement with the cutter being ground to locate the blades in position for grinding.
