Abstract

1,186,247. Punching; assembling components to circuit boards; riveting. JASTAC Ltd. 28 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54077/67. Headings B3A, B3U and B3W. [Also in Division H2] In a method of punching a rigid insert into sheet material, the insert 11 is supported in a punch 10 and the sheet material on a support 26 which is spring-biased at 30, to hold the sheet material above a die 14. In a punching operation the support is first forced downward against springs 30 until the sheet 12 contacts the die face 18 and punching begins. Immediately the support is raised by the springs 30 and the leading end 19 of the insert is driven right through the sheet. If the punch 10 continues to drive the insert downwardly the leading end 19 engages the cutting edge 17 of an aperture 16 in the die and is peened over against the underside of the sheet 12, Fig. 3 (not shown). The method is applicable to inserting metal terminals in printed circuit boards and rivets in metal or other sheets. Alternative shapes for the leading end of the insert are flat, convex and concave. An electric heating coil (not shown) may be wound on to the portion 22 of the die 14.
