Abstract

1,185,943. Siloxane skin preparations. DOW CORNING CORP. 20 May, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 23805/68. Heading A5B. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A skin preparation comprises, by wt., (A) 100 pts of a trimethylsilyl-end blocked diorganopolysiloxane having a viscosity at 25‹C of from 20 to 1,000,000 cs., and which is made up of R 2 SiO units wherein each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 6 C atoms, (B) from 0 to 200 pts. of a hydroxyl-or alkoxy-terminated diorganopolysiloxane, having a viscosity at 25‹C of from 20 to 1,000,000 cs., which is compatible with (A), and in which the organic radicals are methyl, ethyl, vinyl or phenyl, at least 75% of the total organic radicals being aliphatic, (C) from I to 200 pts. of a benzene-soluble organosilicon resin copolymer made up of units of the average formula R n SiO 4-n /2, wherein n has an average value of from 1.0 to 1.8, and (D) from 0 to 200 pts. of a medicament for the skin. The wash-resistance of the preparation is enhanced if (C) is pre-reacted with (B), or if the viscosity of either (A) or (B) is proportionately increased. Ingredient (D) can be an astringent, e.g. AlCl 3 , A1 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , Al paste or calamine; an initant, rubefacient and vessicant, e.g. coal tar, ichthammel, thyme oil or menthol; a local anaesthetic; an antihistamine; a caustic and escharotic agent, e.g. exsiccated alum KOH or AgNo 3 ; an emollient, e.g. almond oil; an antimicrobial agent, e.g. cetylpyriolinium chloride or iodine; a fungicide, e.g. ammoniated mercury; a sulpha drug, e.g. sulphacitamide; an antibiotic; a parasiticide, e.g. γ-benzene hexachloride; a vitamin and nutrient, e.g. vitamin A; or a sunscreen agent, e.g. glycerol p-aminobenzoate. The preparation can be used in the form of ointments, emulsions, dispersions or solutions in a suitable non-toxic, volatile solvent, e.g. water, 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, trifluorotrichloroethane, isobutanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, amyl acetate, cyclopentane, diethyl ether and chloroform. Other optional additives include thickeners, e.g. zinc stearate, bentonite or SiO 2 ; emulsifiers or emulsion stabilisers, e.g. glyceryl monostearate, stearic acid, methyl cellulose, a beeswax-borax mixture or sodium lauryl sulphate; preservatives, e.g. methyl or propyl-p-hydroxybenzoate; as well as cetyl alcohol, triethanolamine, sorbital, allentain, perfume or colouring. In a typical Example (1) 40 pts. (wt.) of the reaction product of a OH-terminated dimethylpolysiloxane and a resin composed of SiO 2 and (CH 3 ) 3 SiO¢ units, were mixed with 100 pts. of a (CH 3 ) 3 Si-terminated dimethylpolysiloxane, 200 pts of isopropanol, 1660 pts of 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, a trace of perfume and a trace of green colouring matter, to yield a clear-coloured liquid.
