Abstract

1,185,933. Microphone diaphragms. M. J. E. GOLAY. 10 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 16255/67. Heading H4J. [Also in Divisions C7 and G1] A tensioned membrane for sensing pressure differentials comprises a support layer, a layer of arsenic carried by the support layer. The membrane may be made by evaporating a 200-500 angstrom arsenic layer on to a 100- 300 angstrom membrane of collodion, formavar or celluloid. The membrane may further carry over all or a central part of its area a reflective evaporated layer of silver separated if necessary from the arsenic layer by a silicon mononoxide layer. Alternatively the membrane may be made reflective by applying several layers of dielectric material to form a dielectric mirror. The membrane may be perforated to make it insensitive to slow variations of pressure. The membrane may be used in a microphone or a seismophone and movements of it may be detected capacitatively or photo-electrically.
