Abstract
1,185,874. Control of D.C. motors. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 2 Feb., 1968 [13 Feb., 1967], No. 6770/67. Heading H2J. A series D.C. motor 1, 2, energizable in either direction of rotation by a battery 5 and interlocked change-over contacts 8, 9 in series with the armature 2, is controlled by a semi-conductor chopper circuit 4 whose firing circuit 12 is in turn controlled by a member 10 manually adjustable to provide a full voltage range across the motor and by a member 11 which detects the sense of the voltage across the armature 2 and restricts the voltage applied to the motor during " plugging " conditions. The circuit 4 varies the mark-space ratio of constant frequency pulses which it applies to the motor and the member 11 applies a signal to the circuit 12 when the motor is operating in the forward direction with respect to the supply voltage (namely when it is not plugging), this signal permitting the circuit 4 to operate over its full range of mark-space ratio variation. Diodes 6, 7 provide stability during the interpulse periods and plugging conditions respectively. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a parallel combination of resistance and short-circuiting switch is connected in series with the armature and field, the switch being controlled by the member 11 so that the resistance is inserted during plugging conditions and shorted out when the motor is operating normally. This latter form of control may be additional or alternative to the voltage regulator circuit 4 which, in a further envisaged modification, may be free from voltage restriction if the resistance control is present.
