Abstract

1388688 Control of D.C. motors CABLEFORM Ltd 20 April 1972 [11 May 1971] 14340/71 Heading H2J A control circuit for the D.C. series motor A, F of a battery-operated vehicle comprises a conventional thyristor switching arrangement S to cause the motor to be supplied with pulses of current of variable frequency and/or markspace ratio as determined by a control signal from a pulse generator (not shown) connected to the arrangement S via transistor T3 and resistor R1, and means to change the control of arrangement S during braking conditions to restrict the range of current which can be applied to the motor and hence prevent the field current from exceeding a predetermined value. This control feature is provided by a circuit comprising transistors T1, T2, diode D3, resistor R2, capacitor Cl and Zener diode ZD1, the capacitor Cl being charged by each gate signal from the pulse generator and discharged by transistor T2 when it and the transistor T1 become conductive due to the armature diode D1 becoming reversebiased when the field and armature currents equalize. During motoring conditions, the circulating current in the armature-diode circuit A, D1 is zero or very low by the end of the interpulse period. Hence when the switch S is turned on, the field current rises to equal the armature current in a very short time so that capacitor Cl acquires very little charge. During braking conditions, when the field winding connections are reversed and a high generated current flows in the armature-diode circuit A, D1 during the inter-pulse period, the capacitor C1 continues to charge as the field current rises towards the armature current and, when it reaches a predetermined value, the capacitor voltage causes the Zener diode ZD1 to conduct to apply a signal to a high rate clamp in the pulse generator, whereby the switch S is controlled to restrict the range of current that may be applied to the motor, for example, by restricting the maximum frequency of the current pulses. Typical voltage and current waveforms during motoring and generating conditions are discussed, Fig. 2 (not shown), and mention is made of adjustment of the value of resistor R2 and/or capacitor C1 to select a desired threshold above which the range of current supplied is restricted.
