Abstract

1,185,861. Water-in-oil emulsion print pastes. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 12 July, 1967 [13 July, 1966], No. 32086/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] A print paste based on a water-in-oil emulsion, a cross-linkable film forming binder and a pigment, contains:- (I) 1 part by weight of an inner aqueous phase containing (a) 0À1 to 10% by weight of a pigment dispersed therein; (b) 1 to 20% by weight of a water-insoluble film forming crosslinkable polymer, and (c) 0À1 to 10% of one or more emulsifiers for the emulsification of (a) and (b), the percentages of (a), (b) and (c) relating to the amount of (I), and (II) 0À1 to 1 part by weight of an outer organic phase which essentially contains in addition to an organic liquid, (d) 0À5 to 30% of a binder soluble in this phase, and (e) 2 to 20% of an emulsifier for dispersing (I) in (II), the percentages for (d) and (e) relating to the amount of (II). Component (d) may be obtained from the same monomers as component (b) and may cross-link with (b). Inorganic and organic pigments are used, e.g. titanium dioxide, iron oxides, carbon black, azo, anthraquinone and phthalocyanine. Preferred components (b) are obtained from (i) 1 to 10% of N-methylol-acrylamides and N- methylolmethacrylamides and C 1 -C 4 alkyl ethers thereof or monomers containing halohydrin groups and (ii) 99 to 90% of a conventional comonomer, e.g. butadiene, styrene, acrylic acids, esters and amides, acrylonitriles, vinyl esters having up to 12 carbon atoms, vinyl chloride and N-vinylpyrrolidone. Components (c) are conventional anionic and non-ionic surfactants. Components (d) may also be ureaformaldehyde and epoxy resins. Components (e) are conventional emulsifiers, e.g. fatty acid amides. The organic liquids used in phase (II) are hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof b.p. 100‹ to 300‹ C. and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Auxiliary components include acid or basic cross-linking catalysts, hydrotropic substances, plasticizers, and thickeners. The print pastes may be prepared by mixing (d) and (e) with the organic liquid and then the dispersion (I) is stirred in using an impeller.
