Abstract

1,185,818. Preparation of nitrilotriacetonitrile. COWLES CHEMICAL CO. 26 April, 1967 [26 April, 1966; 14 April, 1967], No. 12703/69. Divided out of 1,185,092. Heading C2C. Nitrilotriacetonitrile is prepared by reacting in liquid phase hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde and methylene-bis-iminodiacetonitrile. The latter compound may be formed in situ by adding liquid hydrogen cyanide to a liquid phase adduct of formaldehyde and ammonia while maintaining the pH of said phase at a strongly acid value (< 2). The order of addition of the HCN and HCHO can be varied, and sufficient of one or other of these reagents may already be present in the intermediate methylene-bis-iminodiacetonitrile phase to complete the synthesis without further addition. The temperature of the reaction is preferably kept between 50‹ C. and 85‹ C., while the initial step of producing methylene-bis-iminodiacetonitrile is effected below 50‹ C., or by addition of ammonia and HCN in two stages, at approximately 35‹ C. and 65‹ C. respectively.
