Abstract
1,185,499. Measuring knock-rating of fuels electrically. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1968 [Oct. 13, 1967], No.46877/67. Heading G1N. The apparatus utilizes knock detection apparatus, such as that described in Specification 1, 125, 991, and applies a first signal to continuously advance the ignition timing of an I. C. engine and a second signal representative of knock frequency to retard the ignition timing so that it is automatically maintained at the critical setting for the onset of knocking. In Fig. 2, sparking plugs 32 are fired by a transistorized ignition system 34 controlled from distributer contact breakers 38 via a delay unit 36 of which the delay is controlled by a pulse frequency-voltage converter 40 fed from knock detection apparatus 30 so that the delay time is progressively reduced until knocking occurs and subsequently increased in proportion to knock frequency so that a critical setting is maintained. The ignition timing is then measured from the delay time and the engine speed by counting the ignition pulses. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 either the distributer body or the contact breaker plate is rotated by a stepping motor 42 in a direction dependent upon the polarity of the input pulses. Knock-representative signals from the detector 30 are fed through a pulse shaper 50 to a motor drive 46 which retards the ignition, a similar drive 44 being fed from a pulse generator 48 so as to continuously advance the ignition.
