Abstract

1,185,199. Breathing apparatus. FIREWEL CO. Inc. 6 April, 1967, No. 15937/67. Heading A5T. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for converting liquid air or liquid oxygen into gaseous form comprises a container for the liquid having a liquid outlet member and a gas inlet member connected together and so arranged that, no matter how the container is orientated between a vertical and a horizontal position, the liquid outlet is always at the lowest point of the container and the gas inlet is always at the highest point, there also being means for converting the liquid into gas and returning a part of the gas to the container. As shown in Figure 2, liquid air or liquid oxygen 6 is stored in the double walled container 5 there being an outlet 56, 54, 49, 12 from the container providing liquid for breathing, and an inlet 33, 71, 68, 70 supplying gas to the space 9 in the container to maintain pressure on the liquid, the outlet and inlet including swivel connections such that a weight 57 on the outlet maintains the outlet and inlet in liquid and gas spaces respectively in spite of changes in orientation of the container. The apparatus is provided as a pack 8 (Figure 1) to be carried by a miner and also includes a heater 16 converting the liquid to breathable gas, a heating coil 26 providing gas from the liquid for maintaining the gas pressure in the container 5, and a pressure regulating valve 30. The space between the walls 40, 43 of the container 5 is evacuated or filled with insulating material, and the breathable gas is supplied to the miners face-mask via a releasable coupling 20.
