In a process and apparatus for the preparation of standard gas mixtures, e.g. for calibration of gas chromatographs, a small volume of gas from a supply circuit 1 is introduced into a known volume of main diluent gas in a closed circuit 3 and homogenized therein by circulation as by a pump 8. Introduction is performed by a loop valve 2 of known capacity and a determined volume of the mixture extracted by like means 9. Two or more such circuits may be arranged in series (see Fig. 2, not shown). Atmospheres containing traces of a gas impurity of the order of 1 p.p.m. may be prepared using disc valves with a loop of volume 1 ml and dilution circuits of volume between 500 and 2,000 ml. The apparatus can operate under pressure.
