Abstract

1,185,025. Laminated tiling assembly. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 June, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 21815/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B6] An element, for use in lining walls or the like, comprises a plastics sheet 2 provided on one surface with a plurality of ribs formed integrally with the sheet and upstanding therefrom, the ribs being arranged to provide a plurality of cells for receiving tiles, the portion of the sheet within each cell being perforated. In use the sheet 2 is superimposed on, and held in contact with one surface of a substrate 1, and a plurality of tiles 5, is attached to the substrate through one or more interstices in the sheet 2, the space between adjacent tiles 5 being occupied by a cross-member 3 of the sheet. The tiles 5 may be secured to the substrate by a non-inflammable adhesive 6, and the sheet 2 is secured to the substrate by adhesive, or by integral lip portions 4 sandwiched between the tiles 5 and the substrate. The substrate may be of plywood, chipboard, hardboard, asbestos board, precast concrete slabs, fabrics, plastics sheet material, foamed plastics material, or sheet metal, and may be sealed on one or both surfaces by washing with a silicone liquid preparation. The units 5 may be ceramic, natural stone or plastics tiles, or conglomerates of mosaic chips, plates or panels of glass, or plates of metal. The sheet may be of thermoplastics material, e.g. polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, propylene, ethylene, vinylidene chloride, styrene, or vinyl acetate, or polyesters, polyamides, or polyoxymethylene, and may be made by thermoforming, i.e. by draping a hot plastics sheet over a mould using vacuum, cooling, and perforating. The sheet and tiles may be provided on both sides of the substrate. The marginal interstices of the sheet may be left without surfacing units until after installation.
