Abstract

1,184,957. Hydroxyalkyl esters. PFIZER Ltd. 24 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 43710/67. Addition to 1,109,920. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Hydroxyalkyl esters of itaconic acid homologues of formula where R is an ethylene group or an alkyl- or arylsubstituted ethylene group, X is a bivalent, saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2, specifically (2-hydroxypropyl)(2-[2-hydroxypropoxy]propyl) 2-methylene glutarate, are prepared by reacting ethylene oxide or an alkyl- or aryl-substituted ethylene oxide (e.g. propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide or styrene oxide) in excess of 3 molar proportions with an acid in the presence of a catalytic amount of a lithium compound or a tertiary phosphine. Lithium chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, acetate, benzoate, hydroxide or hydride and tri-n-butyl phosphine and triphenyl phosphine may be used, preferably with an inhibitor e.g. p-methoxyphenol. The compounds may be polymerized or copolymerized (see Division C3).
