Freshly pressed clay bricks K conveyed along a path 8, comprising freely rotatable rollers J, are intermittently halted by the abutment of the leading brick with a wall 17 of a conveying path 9, extending at right angles to path 8, which displaces a roller plunger 19 whereby an air valve 6 permits hydraulic or air pressure fluid to pass, via a valve F, simultaneously to the cylinders of a pair of rams C and a single ram E, the ram piston-rods 4 of rams C then extend to displace a crosshead B fixed thereto whereby hollow punches A are displaced through apertures 6 in a fixed plate 7, at one side of the path 8, and perforate a stationary brick K with the clay material being displaced into the bores of the punches A and from the rear open ends 23 thereof, the perforated brick being supported by a fixed backing plate N provided with a heater M whereby adhesion of clay thereto is avoided. Simultaneously with the punching stroke, a pusher D is reciprocated by the cylinder E to displace the leading brick along path 9; the adjacent brick on path 18 being retained in position by a wall 13 of pusher D. At the completion of the punching stroke of crosshead B, a plunger 22 of a control valve H is actuated to retract crosshead B and pusher D whereby the leading brick in path 8 is permitted to move across path 9 to actuate plunger 19 to recommence the cycle.
