A stroke adjusting device for the table of a machine tool e.g. a planing machine, comprises at least one rectilinear cam 1 arranged on the table with its cam surface inclined to the direction BB of movement of the table, a switch 7 adapted to reverse the direction of movement of the table being operated by the coaction of the cam surface 1a with an actuating member 3, 2, the switch being adjustable in position transversely of the cam 1 to adjust the reversal point of the worktable and the actual position of the switch being indicated on a scale on a control panel. The control panel includes control means for actuating a motor arranged to adjust the position of the switch. Two similar but oppositely directed cams may be provided, each having its respective end switch 7 mounted on a transverse slide 4 in order to set the stroke reversal points at both ends of the stroke. The inclination of the cam may be altered in order to utilize the full range of the scale for a reduced stroke of the table. The transverse position of the slide 4 may be transmitted to the control panel electrically or mechanically. It is envisaged that the invention may be applied to a circular table the control cam then being circular though of rectilinear cam surface in development.
