Abstract

1,184,514. Sterilizing fermentation mash: alcohol. JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE. April 19, 1968 [April 21, 1967], No.18540/68. Headings C6E and C6F. [Also in Division A2] A fermentation process comprises forming a fermentation mash, sterilizing the mash or one or more of the ingredients of the mash before forming the mash, by subjecting it or them to 10, 000 - 1, 000, 000 Roentgens of ionizing radiation (e.g. X-rays, gamma-rays or an accelerated electron beam) and then adding a fermentationinducing microbe (e.g. yeast, moulds, bacteria, actinomycetes and algae) to the mash to cause fermentation. In the examples the mash comprises irradiated molasses and water with or without ammonium sulphate and the molasses is fermented to alcohol by yeast. The mash may contain ground cereals, ground potatoes, starches, sugar, black lye from pulping processes and hydrocarbons. The materials are preferably subjected to the ionizing radiation between 0 and 60‹C.
