Abstract
1,184,501. Electromagnetic mixing; electric couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Feb., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 1702/67. Heading B1C. [Also in Division H2] , Electrical connection is made with molten metal 5 contained in a container 3 by providing a duct 9 with an electrode member 11 within its bore so that molten metal fills the duct and is liquid at the end 9A adjacent the container and solid at the end 9;B adjacent the electrode. The duct may either project from the container wall or be a bore through it and is provided with separators to minimise circulation of the liquid within the duct caused by self induced eddy currents. The outer end 9B of the duct is cooled either by coolant circulating in tubes 17 or by an air blast. A normal lug connection connects cable 15 to electrode 11. The connection is used in pumping or stirring apparatus for molten metal and the electrode may have the same composition as the molten metal.
