Resistance ovens. - A cooking-oven has upper and lower chambers independently heated and provided with separate doors, but capable of use as a single chamber after removing a diaphragm, which may consist of an upper perforated plate 8 and a lower heat-insulating plate 9 of asbestos board or polished metal. These plates may be supported independently by ledges. On the bottom of each chamber is an iron heat-storing block 52 or 54, recessed underneath for an electric heater 53, which is connected by bead-covered wires. The lower face of the upper block is grooved to permit air circulation when the heat-insulating plate 9 is removed. Pivoted to the walls of each chamber are one or two auxiliary heaters 23 - - 25 which can rest on the heat-storing block or can be held in recesses in the walls, but out of contact therewith, by spring catches, and may be employed in either position independently of each other and of the main heaters 53. A cover protects the upper auxiliary heater from liquids, which are preferably placed in the upper chamber. Ledges 28, 60 for shelves may be attached to the auxiliary heaters and inner casing. Slag wool &c. a separates the iron inner and outer casings, between which there is no metallic connexion. Small porcelain blocks support the inner casing. Midway between the casings is a three-sided oil jacket 11, provided with filling and emptying plugs 46, 47 and conveying heat to a water tank 13 in the packing above the oven space. The tank 13 is strengthened by ribs at the bottom, and is connected to a gauge glass. A vapour outlet from the oven consists of a pipe 58 which is bent downwards for some distance through the oil jacket. The doors and the door frame, which has a horizontal bar between the doors, comprise inner and outer metal plates connected by asbestos board, the doors being filled with slag wool &c. Each door swings on horizontal pintles surrounded by springs which counteract its weight. When open, the doors are supported by chains so as to constitute shelves. The oven may be of cylindrical instead of rectangular form.
