Abstract
1,184,210. Reservoir pens. PILOT MANNEN-HITSU K.K. 29 Dec., 1967, No. 59146/67. Heading B6P. In a reservoir pen wherein a pen unit is slidable within a barrel and means are provided on the pen for closing an aperture at the writing end of the barrel when the pen is not in use, the pen unit is slidable under the force of gravity from a retracted to a projected position and vice versa, and when slid to projected position is locked in that position by a device associated with the means for opening and closing the aperture at the front end of the barrel. As shown in Fig. 1, the pen unit 44 has a projection 54 sliding in a longitudinal groove of a synthetic resin cylinder 2 within an outer barrel 1. The cylinder 2 at its point end 10 has an opening 11 closable by a member 26 pivoted at its lower edge. Sleeves 4, 5 are fitted around a reduced part 3 of the cylinder 2, and over the sleeve 5 is fitted a cap part 9 constituting an extension of the barrel 1 and having an opening 8 aligned with the opening 11. A spring ring 12 is slidable on the part 3 of the cylinder 2 between a shoulder 6 and the inner end of the sleeve 5 and is urged by a spring 25 towards the point end. A spring member 14 is attached to the ring 12 and extends through an opening 15 in the barrel 1 to be attached to a clip 16 by manipulation of which the ring 12 can be moved axially along the part 3. Secured to the lower part of the ring 12 is a narrow metal strip 21 having at its point end a slot engaged by the lower end of a member 30 having a part slidably mounted on the closure member 26. The spring 25 normally holds the ring 12 forwardly so that the member 26 is in closer position but if the clip 16 and therefore also the ring 12 are moved rearwardly, the member 30 is actuated to move the member 26 to open position. For writing purposes, this operation is carried out after the pen has been held with the point end downwards so that the pen unit can then slide under the force of gravity into projected position determined by its abutting against a shoulder 64 on the cylinder 2. In this position a lip (65, Figs. 4, 5) on the upper edge of the member 26 engages a stepped part 66 on the lower part of a feed-bar holding-cylinder 47 of the unit 44 to hold the unit in projected position. To retract the pen unit, the barrel is held with the point uppermost, and the ring 12 is moved rearwardly by means of the clip 16. The lip on the member 26 is thus released from the stepped part 66 allowing the pen unit to move into the barrel under gravity in which position it abuts a ledge 62 on a removable barrel part 43. Upon release of the clip 16, the parts 12, 21, 26 revert to the closed position. In a modified arrangement, (Figs. 11-13), the openings 8, 11 are close to one another and the end of the strip 12, which is widened, passes between the openings to close them. For locking the pen unit in projected position, a ledge on the extreme end of the strip 12 engages behind the stepped part 66 of the feed-bar holding-cylinder as in the first embodiment. Cartridge pens.-The pen unit comprises a cylinder 47, Fig. 9, and a cover 45 holding a feed-bar 48 with a nib 57 at the front end. Between the parts 45, 48, a cylinder 51 is provided for receiving the open end 52 of an ink cartridge 49. A sealing disc 53 is situated within the end of the cartridge and is rotated to the open position shown in Fig. 9 by the engagement therewith of a part 50 on the cylinder 51 when the cartridge end 52 is fitted on to the cylinder.
