Abstract
1,184,028. Optical fibres. STANDARD TELEPHONES AND CABLES Ltd. Oct.2, 1968, No.46703/68. Heading G2J. An optical transmitting fibre 1 is clad with a layer of ice 2. As shown the ice cladding is continuous and is surrounded by a heat conducting copper jacket 3 and a refrigerating coil 4. Another embodiment providing flexibility consists of a core of optical fibres clad in ice at spaced intervals along its length. In between the regions it is clad with water. The cladding is surrounded by a composite jacket consisting of copper contacting refrigerating coil sections and a poor heat conducting plastics material around the water sections.
