Abstract

1,183,954. Change-speed control; valves. ROOTES Ltd. 15 May, 1968 [18 May, 1967; 14 Aug., 1967; 22 Sept., 1967], Nos. 23230/67, 37307/67 and 43305/67. Headings F2D and F2V. [Also in Division F1] The valve in a by-pass around the butterfly valve 14 of an I.C. engine carburetter 11 is actuated by suction transmitted through a pipe 18 opening to the carburetter mixture passage 11a adjacent the butterfly valve. Valves 26 and 27 in the pipe 18 which are operated by the clutch 8 and the gear-box 6, respectively are open when the clutch is engaged and the gear-box is in gear. A single valve (5), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the pipe 18 may be opened when an automatic transmission is operative by means of a mechanical connection (3) or an hydraulic connection (2). The by-pass valve may comprise a diaphragm 38 biased by a pair of springs 46 and 47 of different rates against the vacuum applied through the passage 18. The lighter spring 46 acts during movement of the valve member 39 to open a first restricted by-pass 43 and the heavier spring (47) acts during opening of an additional by-pass (40a). In a further embodiment of the by-pass valve, Fig. 8 (not shown), the springs (46, 47) are mounted on the same side of the diaphragm as the valve member (39).
