Abstract
1,183,801. Positive clutches; change-speed gear; clutch-brake combinations. G. C. E. GALICHER. 30 Sept., 1968, No. 46366/68. Headings F2C, F2D and F2L. In a friction synchronized positive double clutch or, as shown, a clutch-brake unit for a change speed gear wherein initial axial movement of a sleeve 17 having teeth 18, 21 engageable with clutch teeth 5 on a shaft 1 and brake teeth 22 on a fixed casing 23 acts through bars 49 to move a synchronizing ring 32 or 33 into engagement with a friction surface 41 or 43 on the shaft 1 and casing 23 respectively whereupon friction drag turns baulk pins 46 fast with the rings 32, 33 relative to a flange 26 on the sleeve 17 to prevent further axial movement of the sleeve 17 until synchronism is attained, the baulk pins 46 pass through arcuate slots 37 in the flange 26 which permit the sleeve 17 to rotate relative to the baulk pins 46 to align the clutch teeth for engagement during further axial clutch engaging movement of the sleeve 17. The ends of the clutch and brake teeth 5, 18, 21, 22 are inclined so that axial movement of the sleeve 17 aligns the teeth for engagement by rotation of the sleeve 17 in the direction permitted by the slots 37. The length of the slots 37 is sufficient to permit the sleeve 17 to rotate through an angle equivalent to the pitch of the teeth. The bars 49 have central projections (58, 59) which co-operate with slots 51 in the flange 26 and the ends of the bars slide in grooves 61, 62 in the rings 32, 33. As shown the sleeve 17 is splined on the hub of a ring gear 9 meshing planet pinions 8 carried by an output shaft 2. The pinions 8 mesh an input sun gear 7. Engagement of the brake 21, 22 holds the ring gear 9 for reduced ratio whilst engagement of the clutch 5, 18 connects the sun and ring gears 7, 9 for direct drive.
