Abstract

1,183,604. Measuring position. ING. C. OLIVETTI & CO. S.p.A. 12 April, 1967 [12 April, 1967], No. 16768/67. Heading G4H. The digital position measuring device of Specification 1,120,413 for measuring the displacement of a movable member with respect to a fixed member, which includes a first counter 10 (Fig. 2) the contents of which are converted into analogue form and continuously compared with the analogue position of the movable member B to supply an error signal to control the application of counting pulses to the first counter 10, and a second counter 42, adapted to receive the pulses applied to the first counter, is modified in that display means V are connected to the second counter 42 to allow the position of the movable member to be displayed in digital form. The counter 10 measures the displacement of the member relative to two graduations on a fixed scale (i.e. it is effecting a fine approximation). In one embodiment (Fig. 2) selector switches RR, 47, 48, RA are first set to their position RE in which the counters 10 and 42 are zeroized. They are then moved to the next position so that the counters are supplied with pulses until the count in the counter 10 represents the position of the member B. The counter 10 will count forwards or backwards depending on which scale graduation the movable member B is nearer. If required however the counter 42 may count forwards when the counter 10 is decremented, a negative sign being set up in the counter 42. When the selector switches are moved to their next position ID the contents of the counter 42 may be modified e.g. by introducing a member representing the total number of scale graduations passed by the member B and the selector switches are then moved to their lowest position NO when the loop of a servo system is re-closed and the digital position measuring device operates normally. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the apparatus is adapted to transfer the contents of counter 10 to counter 42 when the selector switches are in one position and to transfer the contents back into counter 10 in their next position.
