Abstract
1,183,169. Welding by pressure; soldering; casting composite sheet Joints; mould materials. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 8 Aug., 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 37816/68. Headings B3F and B3R. [Also in Division C1] A composition to provide a leakproof seal between parts, e.g. of an automobile body, which are spot welded, consists of in parts by weight; 90-99À5 calcium sulphate dihydrate, 0À5-10 suspension agent, and 0-0À05 fungicide. The preferred composition consists of in parts by weight; 98-99 calcium sulphate dihydrate, 1-2 polysaccharide gum, and 0À02-0À04 sodium pentachlorophenol. Animal glue, colloidal silica, clay or montimorillonite instead of polysaccharide gum and sodium hypochlorite, sodium 2-phenylphenate, formalin, sodium o-phenylphenol or sodium 2,4,5-trichlorophenol instead of sodium penta. chlorophenol may be used. 38 parts water to 100 parts composition are used to produce a soft extrudable paste. Overlapping sheet metal portions 16, 18 of members 12, 14 are spot welded at 26 and the paste 19 is inserted by hand or by gun into the gap 20 between the welded overlapped parts to fill a continuous portion of the gap including a major depression 28. The excess paste at the edge of portion 18 is removed by wiping and a tinning layer 30, Fig. 4, consisting of in parts by weight, 30 tin powder, 70 lead powder and zinc chloride in water to form a slurry, is painted over the welded and sealed parts. The water from the paste 19 and from slurry 30 is removed by gently heating by a blow lamp and at the same time the tin and lead are melted. A silicone rubber half mould is placed over the tinned surface and with the mould and joint area heated molten solder, e.g. 91À5% lead, 5% antimony, 3% tin and 0À5% arsenic, at 850‹ F. is poured into the mould to fill the recess formed by the parts and the solder is then ground flat. An example of a composition consists of in parts by weight; 99 calcium sulphate dihydrate, 1 polysaccharide gum, and 0À03 sodium pentachlorophenol, mixed with 50 parts by weight of water.
