Abstract
1,182,961. Synthetic polysaccharides. CHAS. PFIZER & CO. Inc. 19 July, 1967 [17 Aug., 1966], No. 33275/67. Heading C3U. [Also in Divisions A2 and C6] A synthetic polysaccharide is prepared by melting a dry anhydride or hydrate of D.glucose or D-maltose at a temperature and reduced pressure below the point of substantial decomposition of the monosaccharide and in the presence of a relatively non-volatile, edible polycarboxylic acid or anhydride grouping which is a polymerization activator and a cross-linking agent and in the substantial absence of water and air until substantial polymerization with or without substantial crosslinking occurs, the water formed during the reaction being simultaneously removed. Reaction may be at 140-180‹ C. under a pressure of 10<SP>-5</SP>-100 mm. of Hg. According to the initial acid concentration, either a water-soluble product containing ester groups, or an insoluble ester-cross-linked product is obtained; the product may in some cases be a mixture of these. Exemplified acid groupings are obtained using citric, fumaric, succinic, adipic, and tartaric acids and maleic, succinic, itaconic and phthalic anhydrides. The products are useful in the food industry.
